During a Sierra Club sponsored protest against the Keystone XL pipeline on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., last Sunday, several of the protesters expressed support for population control measures including the implementation of a global one-child policy similar to China’s brutal and draconian policy.
“I do believe that our Earth is overpopulated,” one of the protesters said in a video released this week by Americans for Limited Government. When asked if it’s time for a one-child policy, the man replied, “I’m all for that. One child, maybe two child max.”
China’s one-child policy was introduced in 1979 as a population control measure. The Chinese government utilizes coercive measures including forced abortions and forced sterilizations to enforce the policy. The one-child policy is the impetus behind numerous human rights violations and violent attacks by government officials on their own people each year.
Another protester chimed in that people who have “excessive children” are not showing the proper amount of “Earth patriotism.”
“I had my two children. My two children have had their two children, and I think not having excessive children … is the Earth patriotism,” she said.
The woman later implied that the proper way to show “Earth patriotism” and avoid excessive children is to teach young people to use contraceptives.
“When my boys were in their early teens I had lectures with them and told them where we kept the family rubbers,” she told the interviewer.
Another protester in the video harped upon the often used “sustainable development” idea that population control groups manipulate to push through their agenda around the world.
“You can’t have an economy and a civilization that’s constantly growing. It’s not sustainable,” according to the protester.
But in many countries around the world, the population is in decline. And it’s the lack of population growth that is threatening sustainability.
In his new book “What to Expect When No One’s Expecting,” Jonathan Last makes the case that unless the declining population trend in the United States changes soon, the U.S. will face what other countries are already dealing with: shrinking populations affecting development in a host of areas including entitlements, market prices and even the military.
“A couple of things happen when you stay below that replacement level for a few generations,” Last said in an interview with Newsmax. “The first is that your age profile inverts so you wind up with many more old people than you have young people. And then this presents a whole host of problems, it makes your entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare highly unstable.”
Last also said that it’s “very difficult to have any economic dynamism” once the elderly population outnumbers the rising generation. He added that, “Militarily, it becomes very hard to have a solid defense,” both because of the lack of human resources and because of excessive entitlement spending
“The problem is this is global and it’s happening everywhere,” he said. “What happens in countries that are not stable first-world countries like America? When it happens in Russia and China, it is going to create real instability and real problems abroad.”

You should be aware that the individuals quoted in this article are not speaking for the Sierra Club. The Club has no position on a one-child policy.
Thank you for posting, Donald. I think the people in this article are examples of what can happen when people take their love of nature and place it above the love of humanity. The myth of overpopulation needs to be debunked.
It may be true that the Sierra Club has no one-child policy but this does speak to the types of radicals the Sierra Club seems to attract.
Sierra club like the Obama administration talks out of both sides of their mouth on the one child policy..China and Russia face economic ruin due to demographic winter
Every population will grow until it reaches the threshold of its limiting resource. It’s basic, observable ecology. If you don’t want to have to deal with the crisis caused by whatever our limiting resource will be, I’d suggest you switch sides.
